Foreword by Yusef Komunyakaa
New Poets of America Series
In this debut collection
by Alpay Ulku, Meteorology speaks to the prevailing climate
of the times we live in, a metaphor for the disturbances that
buffet the lives of those that inhabit these poems. Moving as
easily over natural landscapes as they do over the landscapes
of the 20th century, Ulku's poems are at once beautiful and powerfully
moving.
Glacier
I can
imagine how it must have been, the glacier
so
cold it wasn't snow that fell
but
light,
the
infrared cooling to ultraviolet,
breaking
down
as
it touched your coat and slid off
the
visible spectrum,
I
could have done so much
vanishing
word
by word as you said it,
then
the bearings: things, direction.
