Readings from Michael Waters and Aracelis Girmay this Sunday!
This Sunday, June 24th, BOA authors Michael Waters and Aracelis Girmay will read their poetry as part of Drew University's MFA Poetry Reading Series! The series (June 21-27) will feature performances from 14 award-winning poets from around the nation and is free and open to the public-- an opportunity you won't want to miss!
Waters and Girmay will read at 7:30 in Mead Hall at Drew University (NJ), along with poet Alicia Ostriker. Waters, author of ten collections of poetry and professor at Monmouth University, is the co-editor of Contemporary American Poetry and has appeared in numerous literary journals. He has been the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, a Fellowship in Creative Writing from the National Endowment for the Arts and four Pushcart Prizes. His published collections include Darling Vulgarity (BOA 2006) and the latest Gospel Night (BOA 2011).
Girmay will also be reading from her recently published collection, Kingdom Animalia (BOA 2011), in which she explores our world as an animalistic entity with hungers and desires, addressing both the difficult and the beautiful in our time on this earth. Girmay received the 2011 Isabella Gardner Award for her work, presented biennially to a poet in midcareer with a new book of exceptional merit. (Who wouldn't want to hear a reading of "exceptional merit"?)
Also featured in this year's series is Ira Sadoff, author of the very recent True Faith (BOA 2012), who read alongside poets Jane Mead and Joan Larkin last night. Sadoff has received grants and prizes from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Education Association and the Poetry Society of America. Gerald Stern (who will himself be reading tonight at 7:30) once referred to Ira Sadoff as “one of the supreme poets of his generation,”and in True Faith, Sadoff uses his talents to explore the pleasures and pains of living life with passionate intensity. Luckily, if you couldn't make it to Sadoff's reading, you can still access his powerful words in True Faith at the BOA Bookstore, along with Girmay's Kingdom Animalia and a prolific selection of Michael Waters' work.
Don't miss your chance to hear these samples of BOA poetry, whether they be old favorites or new-found pleasures!
