The Oasis of Now a finalist for 2014 Best Translated Book Awards
Sohrab Sepehri's The Oasis of Now, translated from the Persian by Kazim Ali and Mohammad Jafar Mahallati, is a finalist for the 2014 Best Translated Book Award in Poetry!
Launched by Three Percent in 2007, the Best Translated Book Awards (BTBA) for poetry and fiction "aim to bring attention to the best original works of international fiction and poetry published in the U.S. during the previous year." Each winning translator and author is awarded a $5,000 cash prize and an award plaque.
Earlier this month, the BTBA won "The International Literary Translation Initiative Award” at the inaugural International Book Industry Excellence Awards. These international awards are a "new fixture of the London Book Fair," and are given for "excellence in categories ranging from translation initiatives to digital entrepreneurship." Sixteen awards were presented in London, "recognizing industry achievement across the globe, and acknowledging the book world’s 'collective success in crossing borders, cultures and languages.'"
The BTBA-winning titles for poetry and fiction will be announced April 28, 2014, at 1pm Eastern Time, to coincide with a simultaneous celebration at Shakespeare & Co. in Paris. On May 2, 2014, all finalists will be celebrated at the Brooklyneer in New York City, from 6-9pm.
