Amy Lee Lillard’s Exile in Guyville, is the perfect read for those who love speculative and dystopian fiction. Lillard achieves a type of storytelling that is simultaneously futuristic and present, that reimagines but holds true to the experiences of women today. To me, her collection of short stories stand as testaments to the deep longing for more which lives in so many women—a longing to be seen, heard, and to achieve more than what is expected or available. In each of their worlds, the characters reach out for more than what they are given, whether for themselves or those they love. In their own distinct ways, the stories leave me moved, through illustrations such as finding refuge in oneself, losing oneself to expectations, deep platonic love, and devoting oneself to a greater cause. I am left both heartbroken and empowered. Lillard forges a path “For the women who have crossed over and can’t go back,” to reach into ourselves and out to one another, to find ourselves in these stories, and perhaps find our own “way into the sunlight.”
