Disaster Porn

by B.K. Fischer

Every time B.K. Fischer spots a couch that is put out for the trash, she pulls over to check it out. Disaster Porn is a record of these curbside encounters and an extended meditation on what it means to live and love under the sign of disaster. Grounded in an ecopoetics that hews closely to lived experience and the life of the body, these poems document what we waste and what we savor as we live through and bear witness to catastrophe at all scales. “Catastrophe,” at the root, means “overturning,” and these poems turn over the language forms—the compositions and decompositions—that give shape to perception, desire, and fear. As those forms break down, spread out, rekindle, and reconnect, the collection tackles questions of theodicy and mortality, envisions Cassandra as a suburban teenager tormented by prophecy, confronts the ubiquity of plastic, and revisits the original site of disaster porn—Pompeii.

In poems that sift through the detritus of the language, tracking the improvisations and accumulations of human and non-human days, a few things turn out to be inescapable: consumer culture, ecoprecarity, gender, domesticity, wanderlust, and the erotic body. Teetering between the apocalyptic and the ordinary, the book finds its foundation in interconnection and entanglement—human connections across time and in bed, lives enmeshed in the places we inhabit.

Praise for Disaster Porn

“Blurring boundaries between human and environmental disaster, B.K. Fischer recognizes that although the intellect and desire that inform our actions have precipitated ecological and personal catastrophes, with their power to connect us to each other and the land, this intellect and desire also hold the key to salvation. Formally dexterous, linguistically playful, and emotionally candid, Disaster Porn bears urgent, poignant witness to the planet’s intensifying environmental crisis and our daily negotiations in navigating it.” —Iain Haley Pollock, author of All the Possible Bodies

“If one task of the artist is to see the world differently, then B.K. Fischer is an artist par excellence. She has the vision to document grungy couches abandoned curbside in suburban neighborhoods and to peer beneath leaves and soil to examine various rhizomatic happenings. She delivers this striking and offbeat content in what has become her recognizable yet inimitable voice mixing seriousness, humor, politics, and a dose of the erotic.” —Alan Gilbert, author of The Everyday Life of Design

"Disaster Porn confronts the dilemma of trying to be a good ecological citizen in a plastic-saturated epoch where 'nature' is increasingly confined to third landscapes, like 'the strip / of grass between sidewalk and street' that doesn’t have the dignity of a name. While witnessing the overwhelm of human accumulation and the detritus from natural disasters, Disaster Porn quietly reminds us that natural processes persist in daily and planetary cycles and in our own life cycles." —Mary Newell, author of ENTWINE
