What We Carry

by Dorianne Laux

Finalist, 1994 National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry

Dorianne Laux's is a poetry of risk, going to the very edge of extinction to find the hard facts that need to be sung. What We Carry includes poems of survival, affirmation and celebration. Sculptured, fluid and generous, they reveal a poet informed by experience and caring. William O'Daly writes: "It seems that Ms. Laux has chosen to witness what she must on her journey, in some way reliving and weaving together who she was and who she is to fully reclaim her body and soul . . . "

Enough Music

Sometimes, when we're on a long drive,
and we've talked enough and listened
to enough music and stopped twice,
once to eat, once to see the view,
we fall into this rhythm of silence.
It swings back and forth between us
like a rope over a lake.
Maybe it's what we don't say
that saves us.
